Description

This is an extremely rare Airstream Argosy Dolphin. You read that right. Originally ordered by NASA in 1976 as shuttle busses…. Months later NASA made a change to larger busses. Three of the shuttles had their shells finished. A couple NASA execs made an agreement to buy the shells for personal motorcoaches and Argosy agreed to remanufacture them into coaches. Airstream reskinned them to eliminate windows and the over height special doors that NASA required; and installed coach doors.

One of the execs had a brother in-law who was at the time CEO of Dolphin Motorhomes; and they decided to make these coaches even more complicated. They shipped them to Dolphin to do the coach conversions.
In 1989 one of the execs totalled his in an accident…. The other exec had two of them… One he used regularly and a spare parked on The other side of the United States in indoor storage at his Arizona vacation time that at the time had 7500 Miles on it. They worked out a deal and he replaced his wrecked RV with the low mile unit in Arizona… And in the deal he also managed to get the vacation home as well. He wanted the coach to be “his”… And despite the low miles he did a renovation. Between 1990 and 1993 he updated it..new onan 6.5 genset (now 109 hours on it)… Modern wheels… New larger roof air…new flexsteel seats…new wineguard satellite system….. Brand New 454 stroked to a 502 with an accel distributor, Edelbrock Carb, new headers and exhaust…. New awnings…new Paint….upgraded the receiver hitch.. $4000 custom front grill set…. And much more. In 2013 he updated the electric panels for the 120 volt system, replaced the fresh water tank and water pump. then it got new airride suspension….while it was at the suspension shop the owner suffered a major heart attack at his home and after a week in the hospital he passed on. The motorhome sat outside at a relatives home until I acquired it in Jun of 2017. I bought it with plans to remodel it and flip it. It has been a bad run of events since and I am forced to sell it. The other existing one like it sold in August 2017 after a fresh update which did not include a new engine…it had 107,000 miles on it…for $64,000.

I have a blueprint in place for the update on this one running about $6500 that would make it nicer than that one. Thus one already has had a lot done at this point…. The electrical system has now been tracked down one wire at a time and labelled on top of all his updates. It still only has 16000 miles on it. He ran it to Florida and back once… Then a few west coast vacations. That’s was it.

It at this moment has the carpet removed and hickory pergo is being Installed. I just replaced the plugs, wires, pcv valve and other vacuum components. I also just put new batteries in it…I went through the propane system and resealed all connections and updated the regulator. All the awnings are perfect still… All three air conditioners work. …

If you are interested in finishing it from here off my plans or make your own… Get in touch. My wife had a stroke and it has set us back .. and changed our entire plan on future vacations. She deserves resort hotels and airplane transportation after last year.

Let’s talk. I couldn’t get pictures to upload so I can send the if you are interested. Serious inquiries only please.
