Priced to sell. A 1954 Airstream 22 Foot Flying Cloud!
Original and Complete! Although with some much-needed repairs.
Here it is! Perhaps the finest, rarest, and most sought after Airstream model ever produced. The style pictured at the top of every page of this Airstream Classifieds website. The famous 1954 Flying Cloud. This camper is truly one of the most beautiful Airstreams ever designed, with a coveted 13-panel crown in the front, and a 9 panel Whale Tail in the rear. The Flying Cloud has an absolutely gorgeous profile.
At 21 feet from tip to tail, this vintage camper is light, airy, and full of room. Configured one of two ways, the FC can sleep 3 adults comfortably, or 2 adults and 2 small kids. The front area has room for a dual bench dinette (not included), collapsible for sleeping. Or just keep it as an open plan. We used a vintage folding table and chair set, that could be easily moved outside for dining or entertaining.
In the back is a gaucho-style convertible sofa that folds out easily to a spacious double bed, a small vanity, and a medicine cabinet. When not configured for sleeping, the gaucho is great for lounging or entertaining.
The middle of the camper has is a beautifully preserved kitchen with original cabinetry, a rare double sink, original Hardwick oven and stove, and original Marvel refrigerator/ice box. There is a small bathroom with a self-contained Jensen toilet, a sink and a shower. And plenty of beautiful birch cabinetry for storage. There is also an original gas lamp and the original Duo-Therm kerosene heater with blower.
With so many windows, the Flying Cloud is bright and sunny. You will never feel like you are in a “canned ham”. Its roomy layout blows away those 19 foot and under models, while still maintaining a feather weight of 2500 lbs. This baby pulls like a dream.
The exterior has all the original lights and reflectors, and the skin is in great vintage shape, ready for polishing. The only changes made to this camper since it rolled out of the factory was the addition of a grey water tank, an interior paint job, new axle, tires, and a water pump. Otherwise this one is ripe for restoration.
This trailer was purchased, by the owner, after months and months of searching, with the hope of restoring it to its original perfection. They purchased new old-stock Amerock cabinet hardware, hinges and pulls, and a Bargman power receptacle, which is all included. But they ran out of money for the restoration building a new location for their business. Yes, it’s a typical story, but it’s true. She now resides in Phoenix, at one of the best Airstream renovation specialist in America. [Thank you Rick.]
With all the beauty of this original gem, there is no way around the fact that there is a need for some repairs. The floor is 60 years old, rotted in places, and is in need of a shell off replacement. This is usually something you find out after purchasing, as in the owner’s case, but now you know it beforehand. For all you novices out there, there is nothing to get anxious about. The cost of a high quality shell-off floor replacement is around $6500, and this amount is already reflected (not included) in the discounted listing price.
After a “shell-off”, the result is a rock solid floor with a new Marmoleum surface, a cleaned and painted metal frame, and new fiberglass insulation. It’s also a chance to paint the interior and refinish cabinetry, if so desired. Not to mention, you will have the rare opportunity to update or customize anything else you can think of while there is full access to the inner shell and frame. RetroRVs is ready to complete this work for the new owner. Who will have the most awesome feeling of confidence that their vintage ‘54 Flying Cloud is solid, sound, and worry free, ready for the next 50 years of very glamorous camping.
