Bud Cooper was the founder of the WBCCI Vintage Airstream Club. A President of Airstream wrote that, “Bud Cooper is the foremost authority on the history and restoration of Airstream trailers.” This is his trailer.
This rare trailer as received dozens of awards, has been featured in many articles and was a story on the History Channel.
Not only is this a show piece, it would be hard to find an easier trailer to tow. This is the same model trailer shown in the famous photo of the man towing an Airstream with a bicycle. With the water tank full, kitchen provisioned and gear stowed, it weighs under 3500 pounds (1587 kg). It is also much more aerodynamic than modern Airstreams. I live in Colorado and frequently tow it over the Continental Divide at 11,158 feet (3400 meters) with a six cylinder engine.
The photos pretty much tell the story. It is a frame off restoration. As you can tell, it is a brand new trailer under an old skin.
Here are the specifics –
22 feet (6.7056 m) from tongue to bumper
7 feet (2.1336 m) wide
A new substantial frame was designed and built with a new torsion axel, steel wheels, new drum brakes and tires.
It has a wet bath with shower, so has fresh water, gray water and black water system. New hot water heater and propane furnace.
Restored original stove, stainless/aluminum kitchen cabinet, sink and ice box converted to gas/12V/110V.
New mattress and bed frame at rear.
Many of the cabinets are original.
It has been kept as close to “period” as possible.
Over 3500 hours of restoration time.
Appraised in 2014 for $68,500
